Work-related Learning in Art

Year 11 students in the Applied Art GCSE class have been working with a local businessman, Stuart Willis, on a live brief to design a retail display for the Gola Sportswear company. The brief required a display for shoes and bags made from recyclable materials which reflected the 'Britishness' of the Gola brand. Stuart, from RMD Creative Designs, has made several visits to the class and supervised the design process. The Marketing Director from Gola visited school to feedback to students and choose two designs to make into retail displays. Lucianna Jefferies created a display based on Big Ben, and Lauren Marson decided on traditional British fish and chips as inspiration for her design. These two designs have been manufactured by Stuart's company and they are now in the window of the Carnaby Street branch of Gola. Lauren and Lucianna recently went to London to see their work in situ and received vouchers to spend in the Gola store. They dined at a Moroccan Restaurant and also visited the Damian Hirst Exhibition at the Tate Modern. Later in the year Lucianna's Big Ben display is travelling to the new Gola store in Barcelona to feature in their window!

This has been a fantastic opportunity for all of the Applied Art students to work on a live brief and link with the design industry.
